Increased letter spacing and greater letter width improve reading acuity in low vision readers

چکیده

Abstract Low vision readers depend on magnification, but magnification reduces the amount of text that can be overviewed and hampers navigation. In this study, we evaluate effects font variations letter spacing, width, boldness have low reading. We tested 20 low-vision patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) used Radner Reading Chart, which measures reading acuity (logRAD), maximum speed, critical print size. The results demonstrated a small, measurable effect spacing width near sizes.

The effect of letter spacing on reading speed in central and peripheral vision.

PURPOSE Crowding, the adverse spatial interaction due to proximity of adjacent letters, has been suggested as an explanation for slow reading in peripheral vision. The purpose of this study was to examine whether reading speed can be improved in normal peripheral vision by increasing the letter spacing. Also tested was whether letter spacing imposes a different limit on reading speed of small v...

Effect of letter spacing on visual span and reading speed.

S. T. L. Chung (2002) has shown that rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) reading speed varies with letter spacing, peaking near the standard letter spacing for text and decreasing for both smaller and larger spacings. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the dependence of reading speed on letter spacing is mediated by the size of the visual span-the number of letters recognized with...

Extra-large letter spacing improves reading in dyslexia.

Although the causes of dyslexia are still debated, all researchers agree that the main challenge is to find ways that allow a child with dyslexia to read more words in less time, because reading more is undisputedly the most efficient intervention for dyslexia. Sophisticated training programs exist, but they typically target the component skills of reading, such as phonological awareness. After...

Effects of increased letter spacing on word identification and eye guidance during reading.

The effect of increasing the space between the letters in words on eye movements during reading was investigated under various word-spacing conditions. Participants read sentences that included a high- or low-frequency target word, letters were displayed normally or with an additional space between adjacent letters, and one, two, or three spaces were present between each word. The spacing manip...

Visuoperceptual deficits in letter-by-letter reading?

A longstanding and controversial issue concerns the underlying mechanisms that give rise to letter-by-letter (LBL) reading: while some researchers propose a prelexical, perceptual basis for the disorder, others postulate a postlexical, linguistic source for the problem. To examine the nature of the deficit underlying LBL reading, in three experiments, we compare the performance of seven LBL rea...
